A French group is now in India, negotiating a multibillion-euro deal for Rafale Marine planes. The conversations, which have centered on price and other critical issues, have been ongoing for the past two days. Originally slated for late May, the negotiations were pushed back to June 12 due to the electoral process at the time.
Details of the negotiations.
The purchase, at more over Rs 50,000 crore, includes 22 single-seater Rafale Marine aircraft and four twin-seat trainer variants from Dassault Aviation. Representatives from the Indian Defence Ministry’s procurement wing and the Indian Navy are in talks with the French team.
Importance of the Deal
This acquisition is critical for the Indian Navy, which now relies on Russian-made MiG-29K fighters. The Rafale Marine Jets will complement and eventually replace the MiG-29s, marking India’s second significant purchase of French fighter jets in recent years.
Urgency and Timeline
India intends to finish the contract by the conclusion of the current fiscal year. The Indian Navy’s desire to bolster its fighter aircraft fleet in the face of a submarine and aircraft deficit is driving the urgency. The Defence Acquisition Council has already accepted the proposal, which is likely to greatly improve India’s naval capabilities.
The Make in India Initiative
India and France are also considering ways to expand the Make in India component of the agreement. This is consistent with India’s goal of building an indigenous aircraft manufacturing business, thereby bolstering its defense sector.
Conclusion
The current negotiations highlight India and France’s strategic partnership in defense procurement. The successful acquisition of Rafale Marine planes will not only enhance the Indian Navy’s operational capability but also support India’s broader defense manufacturing ambitions.
