Jaishankar Assures Action for Release of Detained Fishermen in Sri Lanka

In a determined reaction to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told him that proactive measures will be taken to rescue Indian fishermen arrested in Sri Lanka. This announcement comes as there are growing worries about the well-being of fishermen and their families in Tamil Nadu.

Jaishankar’s Response

Jaishankar stated that 34 Indian fisherman are currently on judicial remand in Sri Lanka, and six others have been convicted and are serving their sentences. He noted that the Indian High Commission in Colombo and the Consulate in Jaffna have worked tirelessly to ensure the early release of these detainees. “You are also aware that the genesis of this issue dates back to 1974, following an agreement between the then Union Government and the State Government,” Jaishankar stated.

Government’s efforts

Highlighting the NDA government’s ongoing efforts since taking office in 2014, Jaishankar stated that addressing the livelihood interests of the fishing community has been a priority. He pledged that these efforts will continue in numerous areas, including engagement with the Sri Lankan government. “You may be assured that we give the utmost priority to the welfare and security of Indian fishermen and will always do so,” according to him.

Chief Minister MK Stalin’s Appeal

Chief Minister MK Stalin had already sent three letters to Dr. Jaishankar on June 19, 24, and 25, imploring him to achieve the quick release of all fishermen and their fishing vessels detained in Sri Lanka. Stalin cited a recent event on June 18, 2024, in which four Tamil Nadu fisherman were detained by the Sri Lankan navy. “These fishermen, who set out from the Kottaipattinam fishing harbour in Pudukottai District, on their mechanised fishing boat, were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy,” he tweeted.

Stalin voiced concern about the impact of such instances on fishermen’s livelihoods, as well as the fear and uncertainty they engender in their families and the entire coastal community.

Moving Forward

The continuous issue of fishermen’s incarceration has long been a sensitive and complex one, affecting coastal communities in Tamil Nadu. The pledge from the External Affairs Minister provides a ray of hope for the afflicted families, who are waiting for the safe return of their loved ones.

The Indian government‘s ongoing diplomatic efforts with Sri Lanka are intended to resolve these concerns amicably while protecting the rights and welfare of the Indian fishing community. As the situation develops, both governments are expected to work closely to find a long-term solution to this reoccurring dilemma.
