In a terrible turn of events, the Kanchanjunga Express destined for Sealdah derailed on Monday after colliding with a goods train at West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri station. According to Zee News TV, the tragedy happened about 9 a.m. and left at least eight people dead and dozens injured. The collision caused the passenger train’s two rear compartments to derail, resulting in widespread confusion and anguish.
The incident occurred near Rangapani station, some seven kilometers from North Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri Station. A senior railway official verified that the incident was caused by the freight train’s locomotive colliding with the Kanchanjunga Express from behind. The divisional railway manager (DRM) of North Frontier Railway’s Katihar division stated that while reports indicate multiple injuries, official confirmation is still pending.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock and grief over the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter). She stated: “Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. The 13174 Kanchanjunga Express was en route from Agartala to Sealdah when the collision occurred. Passengers on board the train have recounted scenes of panic and confusion as the rear compartments derailed and the train came to a sudden halt.
The cause of the collision is yet to be determined, and an investigation is expected to follow. This tragic incident has once again highlighted the need for stringent safety measures and protocols in railway operations to prevent such accidents in the future.
