Nvidia and AMD planning to bring Microsoft’s Copilot Plus AI into Gaming Laptops. All you need to know!

Nvidia and AMD are getting ready to shake up the gaming laptop market by adding Microsoft’s new Copilot Plus AI features. This comes after Microsoft recently announced these features for laptops with Qualcomm processors.

At Computex, Nvidia gave a sneak peek of the upcoming “RTX AI PC” laptops from Asus and MSI. These new laptops, equipped with up to GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs, promise efficient system-on-a-chip designs and Windows 11 AI capabilities.

In a blog post, Nvidia said, “Newly announced RTX AI PC laptops from ASUS and MSI feature up to GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs and power-efficient systems-on-a-chip with Windows 11 AI PC capabilities.” Nvidia also confirmed to The Verge that these laptops will include AMD’s latest Strix CPUs, which AMD has not yet officially announced.

However, Nvidia suggested that the first AMD-powered Copilot Plus PCs might not have all of Microsoft’s AI features right away. Nvidia’s blog mentioned, “These Windows 11 AI PCs will receive a free update to Copilot+ PC experiences when available,” which might mean a delay or an initial exclusivity for Qualcomm-powered devices launching on June 18th. Nvidia has been asked for more details on this.

Nvidia is not just focusing on gaming but also on AI computing. As Microsoft moves more AI tasks to NPUs (Neural Processing Units), Nvidia is making its GPUs better for these tasks. Nvidia plans to release an RTX AI Toolkit in June, which will include tools for customizing, optimizing, and deploying AI models. This toolkit will help run models like Meta’s Llama 2 more efficiently.

Nvidia’s partnership with Microsoft includes developing AI models for Windows 11. Nvidia stated, “The collaboration will provide application developers with easy API access to GPU-accelerated small language models (SLMs) that enable retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) capabilities that run on-device powered by Windows Copilot Runtime.” This will make it easier to add AI features to apps using Nvidia’s GPUs.

Announced at Microsoft Build last month, Windows Copilot Runtime aims to make adding AI features to apps simpler, using either NPU hardware or Nvidia’s GPUs. While NPUs currently offer around 40 TOPS (trillion operations per second) performance, Nvidia’s GPUs can exceed 1,000 TOPS, making them more suitable for larger AI models.

The launch of these advanced gaming laptops marks the start of an AI-focused era in PC technology. As Microsoft, Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Qualcomm, and other partners continue to innovate, the competitive landscape of AI on PCs is set to change dramatically.

Stay tuned as we watch this exciting AI competition unfold, reshaping gaming laptops and beyond
