Tata Nexon EV Scores 5-Star in Bharat NCAP Crash Test

The Tata Nexon EV has been awarded a 5-star safety rating by the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP), becoming one of the first electric SUVs tested by this agency since its introduction in October 2023. While the Nexon EV earned high marks for safety, its detailed scores were not as impressive as those of the Tata Punch EV, which also received a 5-star rating.

Adult Occupant Protection

The Nexon EV scored 29.86 out of 32 points for adult occupant protection. Though this score is sufficient for a 5-star rating, it is one of the lower tallies among Tata vehicles tested by Bharat NCAP.

  • Frontal Impact: In a frontal impact test at 64 km/h, the Nexon EV scored 14.26 out of 16 points for adult occupants in the front seats. It provided ‘good’ protection for the driver and passenger’s head and neck. However, the driver’s chest protection was rated as ‘adequate’, while the passenger’s chest protection was rated ‘good’. Both the driver’s and passenger’s thighs and pelvis received ‘good’ protection, while their tibias were rated ‘adequate’.
  • Side Impact: In a side impact test at 50 km/h against a deformable barrier, the Nexon EV offered ‘good’ protection for the driver’s head, chest, abdomen, and hips. The chest protection was rated ‘adequate’.
  • Side Pole Impact: In the side pole impact test, the chest protection improved to ‘good’, matching the ratings for other body areas.

Child Occupant Protection

The Nexon EV performed well in child occupant protection tests, securing a 5-star rating. Child seats in the Nexon EV are installed rearward-facing. Here are the detailed scores:

  • Dynamic Test: The Nexon EV scored 23.95 out of 24 points.
  • CRS Installation: It earned a perfect score of 12 out of 12 points.
  • Vehicle Assessment: It scored 9 out of 13 points.
  • 18-Month-Old Child: The Nexon EV achieved 11.95 out of 12 points for protecting an 18-month-old child.
  • 3-Year-Old Child: It received a perfect score of 12 points for a 3-year-old child.

Unlike the Global NCAP reports, the Bharat NCAP fact sheet does not provide extensive details about the protection levels for a child’s head, chest, or neck in different crash tests.

Variant Tested

The variant tested by Bharat NCAP was the range-topping Empowered Plus Long Range (LR). However, the safety rating applies to all variants of the Nexon EV.

Conclusion

The Tata Nexon EV’s performance in Bharat NCAP’s crash tests demonstrates its strong safety features, especially in protecting child occupants. Despite having slightly lower scores than the Tata Punch EV in some areas, the Nexon EV’s 5-star rating underscores its commitment to safety across all its variants.
